From my experiences as a nursing student this semester, I have been able to understand the meanings behind what nurses do in their everyday practice. I have learnt that nursing does not only involve treating an individual’s illness, it is about how the nurse affectively cares for the patient and reflects on that experience. This concept will be taken with me when I go to clinical next semester because I know of the influence a nurse’s actions have on each patient. I now know how important it is for a nurse to understand the needs of the patient. I will go into clinical acknowledging that I must be able to utilize caring concepts towards my patients.
In the nursing program so far, I have learnt many qualities about myself and what I am able to offer to others. The most important concept that has stood out in my mind so far is the process of building proper relationships with patients and other health care workers in the hospital environment. I have learnt that the concept of caring is only accomplished through the way the nurse interacts with others. Some skills that have been introduced to me in this process include critical thinking, reflection, and proper communication skills. I have learnt that these are significant aspects that must be considered when developing the components of a therapeutic relationship. By utilizing these techniques, I believe that I will gain increased personal attributes to benefit the individuals I encounter in the hospital.
When I first began the nursing program, I was very nervous for the journey ahead of me. I was nervous because university was a new experience to me and I was unsure if I could succeed in my tasks as a nursing student. With all of these worries however, I was at the same time excited to start my education as a nurse because I knew how rewarding it is for my future.
I entered this program because I want to learn all of the skills nurses acquire to care for others. I chose this career because I believe I can make a difference in someone’s life and successfully help people who are in need. This motivation is what influenced my success and eased my worries when starting the program.
I believe that technology is helping when it comes to overcoming communication barriers in healthcare. From what I have learnt so far, advancing technology has benefited many individuals in the healthcare setting. Today there are so many new ways to communicate efficiently with others, such as through telehealth networks. I have learnt that this type of technology increases communication by allowing patients to communicate with nurses from their homes and at any time.
Another way that barriers have decreased in the healthcare setting is through the use of electronic health records. Because information can now be accessed so fast, there is more time spent communicating with patients. These advances in technology have been utilized in healthcare to benefit communication methods.
